Saving Dogs

This summer was a great one. So much going on in our lives. We are one more semester away from graduating and Carly got a new Job, Yeah! Things are really looking up for us. However even though we are doing well, it does not mean that everyone is. This summer we found dozens of dogs roaming the streets of Dallas, TX. My heart just melts every time I see it. Dogs running across busy Highways, sifting through trash. It just breaks our heart every time we see these animals treated this way.

Here in lies the problem. I think we are not the only ones that see these poor animals being treated this way. And I know we are not the only ones that want to do something about it. But, we all have lives. We all have obligations that we need to attend to everyday and every time we see those poor animals we get reminded about all the things that would be disrupted if we stopped for 5 min and said hey to this puppy. We all do it. We also have a tendency to think that someone else will take care of it. This is called the bystander effect refers to the occurrence in which the more people currently around a situation, the less expected number of people are going assist a person in distress. So this summer I vowed not to be that person and along with my best friend and wife we set out to help the next dog we saw.

This is Baby, We found this Pomeranian outside our school. She was the nicest dog ever. We don’t know how old she was but we did know she had been out there for a while. We put up fliers and took her to the vet. We found that she had a microchip but it was not up to date. We made our best attempt to find her home but after 2 weeks we decided to start trying to find her a new home.  We finally found a forever home in south Dallas with a woman that loved Pomeranians and had 5. So she when with her new brothers and sisters and seemed to love them at first site.

This is Toby, as we were dropping off Baby, Toby this great Pitbull mix puppy walked right up to me. He was so cute and was such a good boy. He came up and sat down right at my feet. His blue, gray and white fur was all dirty and he had definitely been out there a while based on his weight. So, we did it again. Brought him into our home and gave him a bath, fed him and started looking for his home. After taking him to the vet we found out that the owner had just wanted to get rid of him and left the back gate open. The owner said he had no desire to get the dog back and that he wanted him gone. So, we did it again. We started looking for his new forever home. After a few week of online ads we found a nice young girl with anxiety that used dogs to help her calm down. She worked with dog trainers to get dogs ready for service and after meeting her we realized this was just the right dog for her.
We do our best to save as many dogs as we can. We still have those days were it is just impossible to stop for every dog we see and it always hurts to keep driving. But I hope through these success stories you will realize that it’s possible to be that dog on the side of the road’s angel
